Matt and I roomed together in college but drifted apart after graduation. He went on to get a PhD in Physics at Yale (see http://pra.aps.org/pdf/PRA/v5/i3/p1298_1 for his paper based on his thesis).
I believe this mention <http://www.laborhistory.org/awardrecipients> is the same Matthew Borenstein.
Also this scholarship named after him [assuming this is the right him]:
I just did one more google search {"Matt Borenstein" "New Haven"} and found the following which (if it is indeed the right person) says when and how he died.
